As a dietitian, I stress the importance of a varied, nutrient-dense diet. But what I discovered about commercial dog food shocked me. My dog Scrub sheds a lot!
Most dog breeds shed twice a year, but excessive shedding is not normal. As a registered dietitian and developer of functional foods and supplements for humans, I realized my dog's diet was contributing to his excessive shedding. It became clear that most dog's diets lacked necessary nutritional components. I experimented with various dog food brands, hoping to find a solution for my own dog. Unfortunately, I didn't see any improvement.
I used my research background to examine dog food manufacturing practices and common ingredients. I was surprised by what I found. As a dietitian, I always stress the importance of a varied diet that includes fresh, nutrient-dense foods for my clients. While most commercial dog food manufacturers start with acceptable ingredients, many nutrients are destroyed during the high-temperature production process. To meet regulatory requirements, synthetic vitamins and poorly absorbed minerals are added, but these are not ideal, especially since dogs eat the same food every day. Phyto-nutrients and many plant compounds are also degraded during processing. The final product is not the fresh, nutrient-dense diet I recommend for my human patients.
I began an in-depth study of canine nutrition and the nutrients essential for optimal health. I reviewed many studies on specific nutrients and their effects on dogs, their physiology, and their skin and coat. My research confirmed that, like humans, dogs benefit from a diverse and varied diet. There was no single solution or individual ingredient that could be added to fix my dog’s excessive shedding.
